Are there any new updates?
Yes! Click here to read the Gamut Theatre Renovation Project Update from August 2014!
As of Sept. 30, Gamut reached the $1 million mark with a $150,000 donation from the Alexander Grass Foundation to name the Grass Foundation Stage!
Our current rented space is temporary and does not accommodate Gamut's growing needs. As part of our plan for a new space, we sought to:
- Keep Gamut in Downtown Harrisburg for the long term
- Enable Gamut to grow
- Provide effective re-use of a historic building
The move across the street to 15 North Fourth Street meets this vision and provides expanded and customized spaces that serve Gamut's diverse needs. The move will also allow us to preserve a beautiful building and give it a new life and purpose in the community.
Describe the building, please!
The building is located right across the street from Strawberry Square, on North Fourth Street. It is just a few steps from Walnut street. See a satellite view here.
The property is in excellent condition. The facility has been reviewed by Harristown Enterprises, which worked with Gamut to locate an appropriate structure; it has also been reviewed by an architect. Well-maintained, the property has modern electric and is weather-tight (the roof was installed in 2009 and has a long-term warranty).
Our main expenses in the renovations are:
- Air conditioning
- Sprinkler system
- Elevator for ADA compliance
- Theatrical lighting system
We also have an energy consultant working with us every step of the way to ensure the best systems are chosen for containing costs over the long term.
How long will the project take?
Gamut Theatre adopted an ambitious and aggressive timeline and fundraising plan in August of 2013 with the goal of opening our New Space at 15 N. 4th Street, downtown Harrisburg by the Fall of 2014. By October, we had a very rough estimate of $1.8 million, which included Purchase and Phase One renovations of the project. Gamut Theatre has never owned property, let alone embarked upon a capital campaign, and we have spent the past year not only fund raising, but carefully planning the renovations, obtaining necessary city and county approvals, and learning new things every day and every step of the way!
As we raced to raise $1 million in donations and pledges by March 1 to meet our financing goals and begin construction on time, it became quickly apparent that our fund raising calendar did not entirely correspond with the timeline of when funding decisions are made. In June, Strawberry Square granted our request for an extension of an additional year on our lease to our current location. This allows us to continue fundraising and begin our construction in a timeline that better fits our season schedule, instead of trying to move in the middle of a production season. Our new goal is to open Gamut’s New Space in the Fall of 2015!
All of the estimates and bids have been obtained, and we now have realistic numbers for all phases of the project. The entire project is $2.5 million and breaks down this way:
Purchase and Carrying Costs: $500,000
Phase One Renovations: $1,500,000
Phase Two Renovations: $500,000
How much should I give?
Pledges of every size are important. While we are certainly seeking government, corporate, and foundation support, roughly half of the goal must be raised by individuals and families. Click on the Pledge Calculator at the top of the page to see what your pledge payments would look like if paid over a five-year pledge period. You might be surprised at what you can afford. Please give as generously as you can; this is a major moment in the life of your Gamut Theatre.
The Kline Foundation Matching Grant Challenge!
The Josiah W. and Bessie H. Kline Foundation has pledged $25,000 contingent on Gamut Theatre raising $25,000 from Individuals between June 1 and November 1, 2014. As of September, we’ve raised just shy of $2,425 toward this goal and continue to actively seek individual gifts to get us to the $25,000 goal before November 1.
Are there naming opportunities available?
There are many interesting spaces which can be named through the campaign. Check out the Resources area of this site to see a current list of what is available. Email us to secure an opportunity.
What is planned giving?
Planned giving offers creative ways to give from accumulated assets while receiving significant tax and even income benefits. Did you know that you can give from appreciated stock to avoid capital gains tax while also taking an income tax deduction? Did you know that you can give personal property? You can even set up a charitable remainder trust to provide yourself an income for life while also helping Gamut. Hey, making Gamut a beneficiary in your will is also an option. We're actors, not tax accountants...so talk to your financial planning professional about what option is right for you! You can also learn more here.
