Why are Shrine Mont and the Diocese of Virginia raising this money?
The Shout it from the Mountain campaign will raise funds necessary to preserve and enhance the diocesan camp program at Shrine Mont for generations to come. This will be accomplished by providing the funding needed to renovate and rebuild the camp facilities at Shrine Mont, creating an endowment at Shrine Mont to preserve the buildings for the future, and creating an endowment at the Diocese for scholarships so that any child or family can attend a Shrine Mont camp regardless of their financial situation.
Who will benefit from this campaign?
We all do! By providing a place that is set apart, and by nourishing camp programs for fellowship, renewal and celebration of God’s creation, each person in the Diocese benefits. Those who have come to the Mountain know about the spiritual philosophy of community support and accountability. It has been described as a “Leadership Laboratory” – a place where people gain the spiritual grounding to lead the Church, whether through ordained or lay ministry.
How much money do we need to raise?
In order to reach our goal, we must raise a minimum of $2 million. In an act of faithful stewardship, Bishop Shannon Johnston has challenged the people of the Diocese of Virginia to raise $2.5 million for the benefit of the camps program. Your participation is very important to the success of the campaign – the more people who participate, the closer to our goal we will be.
How are the church members being asked to participate?
Each household within the Diocese of Virginia will be asked individually to make a commitment to the Shout it from the Mountain campaign. Additionally, we hope that many members will pray for the success of the campaign, and that many will volunteer their time.
I give to the church through my parish which supports the Diocese. Why are Shrine Mont and the Diocese asking me for more?
Parish support covers operational costs for the Diocese, such as guiding parishes through the search for a new rector, preparing seminarians for Holy Orders, offering youth and young adult ministry programming, supporting congregational leadership, and providing resources for worship and Christian formation.
Scholarship funds for camp participation are not covered by the operating budget of the Diocese, but from restricted funds under the oversight of bishop and trustees.
Shrine Mont is independent financially and receives no subsidies from the Diocese of Virginia. Funds raised in this campaign will help Shrine Mont upgrade the camp facilities and have an endowment to maintain them in the future.

When do we make our commitments?
Please make your commitment after you have prayerfully considered the level at which you will participate. Because the Diocese of Virginia has 22,000 households and covers a wide area, geographically speaking; and the Shrine Mont camps have touched many families from throughout the country, we are tackling this campaign goal in phases. This will take the rest of 2014, and into 2015, to accomplish. Rest assured that the campaign will offer you an opportunity to participate, so we ask for your patience.
Do I have to pay it all at once?
The Shout it from the Mountain campaign is designed to have a three-year giving period. While you can certainly pay all at once, you may divide your pledge up into yearly, monthly or weekly payments over the coming three years. Or if you would like to make a larger contribution than your three-year budget would allow, you can certainly give over five years; just be sure to note that on your pledge card.
When is the giving period?
Your pledge can be paid over those 36 months, beginning January 2014, or as soon as we receive your pledge.
What happens if I can’t fulfill my pledge?
If your circumstances change, please let our diocesan/Shrine Mont treasurer know, so that the treasurer can adjust your pledge to reflect your new circumstances. Please know that we regard your pledge as an intention.
Can I make a pledge with something other than cash?
Yes! There are many ways to give to the Shout it from the Mountain campaign. Gifts of stock, real estate and other assets may be given to the campaign fund. Please contact the diocesan/Shrine Mont treasurer for more information on how to do that..
Will my commitment be made public?
The Shout it from the Mountain campaign leadership would like to thank those who have given generously of their treasure. We will publicly acknowledge giving ranges in our “thank you” materials, so if you would prefer that your giving range remain confidential, please indicate that on your pledge form, as well.
Who will see my pledge?
This is a common question. The treasurer, our consultant and the bishops will know what you gave. Once your card/form is turned in, campaign leadership gets notified so that you can be thanked.
Is my pledge legally binding?
No, your pledge is a statement of how much you intend to give; it is not legally binding. If, during the course of the 36-month giving period, you need to adjust your pledge either up or down, please contact the treasurer.
I hear that you'll be making some changes to the cabins. How can I learn more about that?
Below, you'll find a document that outlines the changes to be made to our summer camp programming which will bring us more into “best practices” with other Episcopal camps across the country, as well as feedback received over the course of two nights of “listening sessions” around the Diocese in November 2014. The intent of this process is to inform these constituencies about the future of the camps and listen to feedback about what is important as we look toward the next 50 years of Shrine Mont Camps. This feedback will inform Shrine Mont as structural changes are prepared and will inform the diocesan staff as they prepare staff guidelines and training. Please look at the documents – especially the “Cabin Change Details” – and send any feedback or ideas you have to Paris Ball at email@example.com.
